The Rearguard by David Pentland. (AP)

Preussisch Stargard, East Prussia, February 1945. Following the departure of the platoon's two other vehicles, after expending all their ammunition, the single Jagdpanther of Oberfeldwebel Hermann Bix remained to cover the withdrawal of all supporting infantry in the area. Hidden behind a muck heap, with only twenty armour piercing and five high explosive shells remaining he made the attacking Soviet Shermans pay a heavy price, destroying sixteen of their number before he too fell back out of ammunition.

Personal notes on this painting from the artist :

Hermann Bix commanded tanks on the Eastern Front first to last, from Panzer III's to Panthers. His final battles however were in the Jagdpanthers of 4th Panzer Division. These had been issued to his company in lieu of Panthers, and although initially disliked due to the fact they had no turret, later came to be accepted, largely due to the power of their 88mm gun. For the painting I decided to show his Jagdpanther as a late version with an appropriate three tone camouflage pattern for the period and location. As it was winter I gave it a whitewash finish as well. I could find no information on Bix's tank number however, and opted to omit both numbers and national crosses, as was frequently the case with the Jagdpanther.
